Events of September 2014
- Tarkington Fermi Questions
- Aug 26, 2014 – Sep 9, 2014
-
Amanda met with both 3rd grade classrooms to conduct sessions on Fermi questions.
- Math Support for SBCSC Career and Technical Education
- Sep 1, 2014 – Dec 19, 2014
-
On a weekly basis, we offered math support for students in South Bend
Community School Corporation's Entrepreneurship, Welding, and Building
Trades Programs. In addition to helping to strengthen algebra and
other math skills needed by students, we provided weekly hands-on
activities designed to show the importance of math in daily life and
to improve conceptual understanding of various math concepts. In
addition to this work with students, we also led professional
development workshops for the instructors of a wide range of Career
and Technical Education courses.
- Online Linear Algebra Math Circle
- Sep 3, 2014 – Dec 17, 2014
-
Craig Daniels and Amanda Serenevy met once a week online to discuss
questions relating to the space of 2 by 2 real matrices. The goal was to
acquire a deeper understanding of these topics for the purpose of
formulating future Math Circle sessions.
- Euler Math Circle
- Sep 8, 2014 – Nov 17, 2014
-
The Euler Math Circle, named for Leonhard Euler (1707--1783), will meet
on Mondays from 4 to 5 PM. Join us as we figure out what it takes to make
mathematics and break mathematics. We will learn about axioms, use
various proof techniques, and invent new systems of numbers. We will
ramble past subjects such as number theory, geometry, trigonometry,
calculus, complex analysis, and abstract algebra. Most students in the
Euler Math Circle will be 9 to 15 years old. Students in this group
should have mastery over elementary level mathematics including
multiplication, division, and fractions. Students in this group must be
enthusiastic about discussing abstract mathematical ideas.
- Wallis Math Circle
- Sep 8, 2014 – Nov 17, 2014
-
During this semester, the Wallis Math Circle, named for John Wallis
(1616--1703), met on Mondays from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. Get a jump-start on
learning math as we hop on number lines to learn how to add, subtract,
multiply, and divide. During our journey, we will search the number line
for the world's biggest and smallest numbers. Most students in the Wallis
Math Circle will be 4 to 7 years old.
- Boole Math Circle
- Sep 8, 2014 – Nov 17, 2014
-
The Boole Math Circle, named for George Boole (1815--1864), Mary Everest
Boole (1832--1916), and Alicia Boole Stott (1860--1940), will meet on
Mondays from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. During this adventure, we will meet some
creatures who tell the truth, some who lie, some whose statements are
always paradoxes, and others who always change the statements they hear
in certain ways. Using logic, we will unravel puzzles so that we can
successfully reach our destination and save the day. Most students in the
Boole Math Circle will be 7 to 11 years old. Students in this group
should know how to add and subtract fairly well, and may be working on
multiplication, division, and fractions.
- Science Enrichment at Hebrew Day School
- Sep 10, 2014 – Dec 20, 2014
-
This semester, Andrea met with one student twice a week for science
enrichment.
- School Age Mothers Program
- Sep 12, 2014 – Dec 5, 2014
-
For this program, Amanda met with school age mothers weekly to help them with math remediation.
- Math Studio
- Sep 16, 2014 – Dec 12, 2014
-
The Math Studio is a free program for people of all ages that provides
participants with math help and enrichment. Math Studio is open
Mondays through Thursdays from 6:00-8:00. We offer math classes, STEM
classes, games, and homework help.
- Math Remediation at Hamilton Primary for Third and Fourth Grade
- Sep 16, 2014 – Dec 20, 2014
-
We meet after school once a week with each grade (3 and 4) to bring
students up to level.
